Herbert R. Wood, age 93 years, of Readington Township, NJ, died Monday, January 23, 2023, at Care One at Somerset Valley in Bridgewater Township, NJ.

Born in Ballville, Ohio, February 28, 1929, son of the late Herbert and Blanche Coulson Wood, Herb had resided in Readington Township since 1981 and had formerly resided in Avenel, NJ.

Herb served in the US Army 1947-1968 and retired as a First Sergeant after twenty-one years of active service. He was a veteran of both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retirement from the armed forces, he was employed by the US Postal Service for fifteen years serving as Postmaster of Whitehouse Station Post Office 1980-1986 until retiring. After retiring from the postal service, he was employed by Carver’s Auto Parts, Flemington, NJ.

He was a member of the Three Bridges Reformed Church and the VFW Post, Glen Gardner, NJ where he participated in its breakfast club.

Active in the Masonic Lodge, Herb was Past Master of Darcy Lodge #37, F& AM of Flemington, NJ; Past District Deputy for the 14th Masonic District of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey; Past Grand Commander of Knights Templar; Past Illustrious Master of St. John’s Commandry, Union, NJ; member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Trenton and a member of Crescent Temple Shrine, Trenton NJ, and was a former Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey. Herb was also former High Priest of Clinton Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons of Flemington, NJ, formerly served as Royal Arch Grand Master for the State of New Jersey and was Thrice Illustrious Master of Adoniram Council #9, R & SM of New Jersey.

He was pre-deceased by his wife, Lillian Bauer Wood, who died in 2006 and two sons, Wayne Wood, who died in 2002 and Reid Wood, who died in 2020.

Surviving are three sons, Daniel Wood (Tammy) of Alpha, NJ, Clark Wood of Flemington, NJ and Walter Wood (Jen) of Whitehouse Station, NJ; a daughter, Dawn Slicklen (Jim) of Flemington, NJ; a brother, James Wood of Nashville, TN; his daughter-in-law, Janet Wood of Woodbridge, NJ; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 11:00 AM in the Three Bridges Reformed Church, Main Street, Three Bridges, NJ. Interment, with his late wife, will take place on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 11:30 AM in Brig. Gen William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown, NJ. Calling hours will be Monday, January 30, 2023, 6:00 PM-8:00 PM at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Masonic funeral services will be held Monday at 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
