Howard M. Fairchild, Jr., age 78 years, beloved father, grandfather, and friend went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 26, 2009. Howard's dedication, commitment and love of God and his family will forever live in the hearts of all who loved him.
He was born in Allentown, PA, March 1, 1931, son of the late Howard M. and Anna Giering Fairchild.
Mr. Fairchild graduated from Allentown High School in 1948 and majored in Mechanical Engineering at Penn State University. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a professional manager in multiple industrial companies; Union Carbide, Stanley Tools, and McGraw Edison as well as being a successful Real Estate professional in Hunterdon County, NJ. The majority of Howard's life was spent in Hunterdon County, later moving to Denver, CO, and Tampa, FL. He will be joining his second wife, Carolyn Sue Fairchild, his brother Donald Fairchild and his parents who preceded him in death.
Howard led a very active life. He was an avid golfer and a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. He was also very involved in Indian Guides, Little League, and the Boy Scouts of America where he mentored not only his own children, but many others whose lives he touched. Howard had a love of music and for years he was the lead in the Hunterdon Harmonizers, and participated in various Barbershop Quartet groups. Aside from Howard's commitment to his community and faith, Howard will be remembered for his infectious smile, especially by his children who referred to him as "Johnny Carson" not only for his likeness, but for his witty sense of humor that was admired and enjoyed by all.
Prior to moving from Hunterdon County, Howard was a faithful member of Calvary Episcopal Church, Flemington, NJ. He was a Lay Reader, a Lay Eucharistic Minister and Choir member as well as heading and serving on various committees. While residing in Florida, Howard and his wife, Carolyn, were active members of Grace Episcopal Church in Tampa.
Howard was the beloved father of four children, their spouses and eleven grandchildren: Daughter Deb and her husband Ken Wilson of Bethlehem Township, NJ, son Skip and his wife Nina of Medford, NJ, daughter Jan and her husband Mike Tintle of Nazareth, PA, and son Mark Fairchild and his wife Jill of Doylestown, PA. He will also be deeply missed by the grandchildren he leaves behind; Tara, Shayna, Laura, and Erich Wilson, Sydney and Logan Fairchild, Tessa, Hayley and Brad Tintle, and Carlee and Brooke Fairchild. Howard is also survived by three stepchildren, Robert Ralston of St. Louis, MO, Deborah Cibenko of Tampa, FL, and Stephen Ralston of Edgewater, FL, and step grandchildren Stephen, Anthony, Jacqueline and Louis Ralston. Howard also leaves behind a large loving extended family.
A Memorial Service celebrating Howard's life will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 11 AM in Calvary Episcopal Church, 44 Broad Street, Flemington, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
