On Thursday, December 22, 2022, Ida Giliberti, loving mother and grandmother, went to be with the Lord at the age of 91.
Ida was born on January 11, 1931, in Avellino di Serino, Italy. The daughter of Vincenzo and Sylvia (Scalzulli) Ballante.
Ida grew up during the Great Depression and experienced some hardships early in her life. Ida lost her mom at age 9 and was raised by her dad and her older sisters. Even with all the tribulation of growing up during the Great Depression and a major war, Ida was a very religious person and trusted in God to provide and take care of her.
One of the most memorable moments growing up as a teenager occurred during World War II. Ida and her siblings were living in an abandoned railcar during the war and did not have the everyday necessities like food and clothing. When the US Army made its way through the Avellino area, a US soldier provided her family with bread, food, and chocolate for her siblings. One US soldier also noticed Ida without shoes. Feeling compassion for her lack of shoes, the American soldier found a pair of shoes for her, and Ida was extremely grateful for them. A story she always cherished and was forever grateful for that soldier’s act of kindness.
Ten years later Ida met her future husband, Lorenzo. Ida and Lorenzo got married in the mid 1950’s and made their way to America aboard the ocean liner SS Andrea Doria.
Ida settled in Paterson, started a family, and worked as a seamstress for many years in various factories in the downtown Paterson area.
Ida was a devoted wife, and mother to her two children. Her family meant the world to her. Always going above and beyond for her family. Ida loved preparing Sunday dinner for her family and especially celebrating Christmas and Easter.
What Ida loved to do most was cook and spend time with her family, especially with her grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Lorenzo , her sister Ada, many brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law, a niece Rosanna, and a nephew, Mario.
Surviving are her sons, Louis and his wife Kate, Lucio, and his wife Linda, four grandchildren, Christopher, Anthony, Amanda, and Christina. She is also survived by her brother Pasquale, sisters Ninette and Sylvia and many nieces and nephews in Italy and in the United States.
Ida’s family would like to thank the kind and helpful medical staff at Kessler Rehabilitation at Chester, NJ especially Silvana and Elise. The great doctors, nurses, and staff at Morristown Medical Center. Especially Dana and Natasha. The family is forever grateful.
