Irvin E. Hockenbury, life-long Hunterdon County, NJ resident, and dedicated local farmer, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, at the Rolling Hills Care Center in Clinton Township, NJ. He was 91 years old. Born at home in Ringoes, NJ, on May 21, 1933, he was the son of the late Levi D. and Myrtie (Parkes) Hockenbury. He embodied the values of hard work and responsibility throughout his life.
For over 70 years, Irvin committed himself to the farming industry, where his passion and dedication were evident in every aspect of his work. Even at a young age, he loved farming, always asking his parents for "farm toys" around Christmas time. His contributions to the agricultural community were profound, and he was known for his long-standing memberships in various organizations that fostered agricultural development and youth involvement. Notably, he had been a member of the Mt. Airy 4-H Dairy Club since 1947, served as a past-director of the NJ Farm Bureau, and was past-president of the Holcombe Jimison Farmstead Museum. Additionally, Irvin was an active participant in the Hunterdon County Board of Agriculture, the Hunterdon County 4-H and Agricultural Fair Board, and also the Agway and United Milk Producers.
Irvin's educational journey began with his graduation from Flemington High School in 1951, where he demonstrated exceptional commitment by representing New Jersey at the National 4-H Club Congress in Washington, D.C. during the summer of that same year, choosing this significant opportunity over his own high school graduation ceremony.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Irvin also served as a member of the local Civil Air Patrol during World War II as a teenager, reflecting his patriotic spirit and commitment to his community. His interests extended beyond farming; he enjoyed bowling and photography, hobbies that allowed him to connect with friends and family throughout the years.
Irvin's pride in his family and community was evident in all aspects of his life. He was a steadfast member of the Reaville Church, where he found joy in attending services and participating in activities such as the church dart league.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 67 years, Vilma (Henkel) Hockenbury; his two children, Kurt Hockenbury and his wife Lissette, and Bruce Hockenbury and his wife Amber; his cherished grandson, Milo Hockenbury; his sister, Nancy Ringer; and several nieces and nephews who will fondly remember his legacy.
Irvin was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Lester, Lloyd, Milton, and Carl Hockenbury.
His legacy will be honored with a series of services beginning with a visitation on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, located at 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. A second visitation will take place on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Reaville Church, situated at 191 Old York Road, Raritan Township, NJ, followed by a funeral service at the same location beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will occur at the family plot in Amwell Ridge Cemetery, 12 Old York Road, Ringoes, NJ, following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Hockenbury's memory may be made to the Reaville Church, 191 Old York Road, Ringoes, NJ 08551 or to the Mt. Airy 4-H Dairy Club, PO BOX 2900, Flemington, NJ 08822.
