James Allen Lomauro, age 93, died surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 27, 2021, at Bridges by Epoch in Andover MA. Born April 15, 1928, in Passaic NJ, he was the son of the late Dr. James Rosario Lomauro and Madeline F. (Smith) Lomauro. He was a graduate of Pope Pius XII High School in Passaic, and a 1951 graduate of William Paterson College, with a BS degree in Education, and earned his master’s degree in Education Administration & Supervision at Montclair State College in 1957.
Jim proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force, enlisting in June of 1951 at Sampson Air Force Base, Geneva NY. He was a Flight Leader School graduate and Academic Instructor School graduate in Military Science & Tactics. He then taught at the rank of Staff Sgt, Military Science & Tactics (Atomic, biological, chemical warfare, rumors and propaganda, First Aid) Land & Live survival for arctic, jungle, desert, ditching survival, medical evacuation, use and care of parachute.
Jim graduated Officer Candidate School at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas in 1953, was honorably discharged and accepted a Commission as 2nd Lieutenant, assigned to Lowry Air Force Base, Denver CO. He graduated as Air Intelligence Officer, Photo Interpretation/Radar. In September 1953, he transferred to Active Reserve, to which he served until 1961. Jim was a dedicated member of Korean War Veterans, Taejon Chapter 170, American Legion Post 171 and Catholic War Veteran Post 1710.
Jim taught in public schools from 1953 to 1986, mostly in Fair Lawn, NJ. Teaching was as natural as breathing to him, with a dedication to promoting learning and awakening potential for children, and for much of his career teaching 5th grade. He taught Native American Indian Lore at Knights Day Camp in Upper Saddle River NJ for many summers, as well as later in retirement with Project Impact and Audience Pleasers. For his years of dedicated teaching of Native American Lore, Jim was given the Native American name “Day Owl” by a woodland tribe.
Jim was a longtime NY Yankees fan, and also played the piano from childhood well into his senior years, and enjoyed playing at VA Hospitals and for many parties and family gatherings. Jim’s joy of life and caring for others made the world a better and happier place.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Eleanor (Carr) in 2014 and his son, James, in 2014. He is survived by a son, Thomas A. Lomauro and wife, Laurie, of Lake Worth, FL, and grandson, Andrew, and his wife Leah, great-grandsons Griffin and Parker, and his grandson Matthew; his four daughters and two sons-in-law, Joyce Lomauro Barlow and Peter Barlow of Portsmouth, England, Susan Lomauro of Tewksbury MA, Amy Lomauro of Wakefield MA, and Lynne French and her husband, Terence, of Pittstown NJ, as well as his grandchildren Grace, T. Justus, and Olivia French. Also surviving are two brothers, Paul Lomauro, and his wife, Carol, of Bradenton, Florida, Donald Lomauro, and his wife, Jeannie, of Garfield, NJ and one sister, Madeline Molloy, of Belmar, NJ, and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be officiated by the Rev. Matthew Marinelli at 10:30 am on July 1, 2021, at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington NJ 08822. Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Magdalen Cemetery, Flemington NJ. Calling hours will be from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday evening at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ. There will be a poetry reading of some of Jim’s works at 7:45 pm at the end of the calling hours on Wednesday.
