James I. Read, age 78 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, June 20, 2014 in the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.

Born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, August 11, 1935, son of the late Thomas and Anne Irwin Anderson Read, he formerly resided in Readington Township for many years before recently moving to Raritan Township.

He served in the Royal Air Force, specializing in early warning systems. Since the mid-1960’s, Jim worked for the National Starch and Chemical Company in Canada and United States before retiring in 2001 as Director of Technology, Starch Division, International.

An avid tennis and golf player, Jim belonged to the Flemington Tennis Club and loved playing at Heron Glen Golf Course, Ringoes, NJ. He also enjoyed swimming and loved to travel and took many cycling holidays in England, France, Italy, and Norway.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Anne Read of Flemington, NJ; a son, Thomas Alexander Read of Morris Plains, NJ; a brother and sister-in-law, John Colin and Jean Read of Silsden, W. Yorkshire, England; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Helen and Tony Cornwell of Grimsargh, Preston, Lancashire and nephews, Ian and Adrian (and wife, Karen) Read of Edinburgh, Scotland.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014 at 3:00 PM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be private. Calling hours will be held Friday from 2:00 PM until time of service.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Jim's name may be made to Easter Seals New Jersey, 25 Kennedy Blvd., Suite 600, East Brunswick, New Jersey 08816.
