Janet Arleo

Janet Arleo, age 100 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019 at the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ. Born in Newark, NJ, on August 7, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Archibald and Priscilla Phyliky Carswell. She grew up in Basking Ridge, NJ, along with her sister, Priscilla. She lived in South Orange, NJ most of her adult life, and resided there with her husband and 3 children. She moved to Flemington, NJ about 22 years ago. A retired educator, Janet taught at various public schools throughout NJ, including South Orange, Newton and Roselle school districts. She had a strong interest in the arts, and it was an important part of her life. As a young woman, she sang with the Collegiate Chorale under the direction of Robert Shaw. She also played the piano, and passed along the love of music to her children. She was a talented artist, and was a member of the Hunterdon Water Color Society. She felt strongly about her civic duty, and was a member of various organizations in her lifetime, including the PTA and the League of Woman Voters. She was active in the Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon at the First Presbyterian & Trinity Church in South Orange. She was also an active member at the Flemington Presbyterian Church. Janet was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Vincent Arleo; a daughter, Judith Arleo Tessein; and a sister, Priscilla Carswell Bruno. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Marc DiDonato, of Stockton, NJ; her son, Andrew W. Arleo, of France; her grandchildren: Jenny, Francois, Roxane, Jeffrey, Carol, and Katherine; and her great-grandchildren: Victor, Agathe, Robin, and Adrien. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 11:30 AM in the Flemington Presbyterian Church, 10 East Main Street, Flemington, NJ, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
