Jay R. Monroe, V, of Hopewell, NJ, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2021, with his wife and son by his bedside at St. Peters University Hospital, New Brunswick, NJ.
He was born in Orange, NJ, on March 24, 1945, son of the late Malcolm and Dorothy Wheeler Monroe and grandson of the late Jay R. Monroe, founder of the Monroe Calculating Machine Co. He was 76 years old and had formerly resided in Short Hills, NJ.
An avid music lover and record collector, Jay headed bands that played throughout NJ, and later started a company, R&BTeez, in which he designed and sold tee shirts with labels of 78 rpm's that were part of his vast collection. He had extensive knowledge of the music and recordings of rhythm and blues of the 40's, 50's, and 60's and was often sought out for his expertise and advice on the topic.
He was also President of the Jay R. Monroe Memorial Foundation and a former trustee of Bonnie Brae School, Liberty Corner, NJ.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (Pop Pop) to his beloved granddaughter, Sophia, and as a passionate champion of abused and homeless animals, many of which he adopted over the years. He was always concerned about life's neglected and forgotten and did all he could to help them.
He is predeceased by his beloved daughter, Susanne, in 2013. He leaves behind his high school sweetheart and wife of 56 years, Susan, his loving son, Jay, VI, and one adored grandchild, Sophia Josephine Monroe.
A memorial service will be held at the Holcombe Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ, on Saturday, May 22, at 3 pm.
