Jean Raff Comeforo died peacefully on March 28, 2010 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold, NJ. Born in Jersey City on January 29, 1924, the only child of John Raff and Minna Schulze Raff, she grew up in Metuchen, and was graduated with the Metuchen High School class of 1941. She attended the New Jersey College for Women (later Douglass College), receiving her Bachelors Degree in 1945. That same year, she married Jay Comeforo, who survives her, along with their two daughters, Jean Comeforo of Media, PA and June Curtis of San Carlos, CA (and her husband, Frank). Jean also is survived by her granddaughter, Lee Curtis Eaton of Manalapan, NJ (and her husband, Gary).
Jean met Jay on a blind date in college, which was set-up by one of Jay’s friends who also knew Jean from High School. This soon to be Rutgers/Douglass couple was married for a very happy 65 years! And during this time, Jean brought love, enthusiasm and joy to her family, friends, community and even strangers.
An accomplished cook, Jean loved to entertain at the hilltop home she and Jay built on Fox Grape Road in Raritan Township in 1958 and lived in for nearly fifty years.
In the 1960’s and early 70’s, Jean worked as a field and public relations director for the Rolling Hills Girl Scout Council, based in Somerville, NJ. In the 1970’s, Jean and Jay started the Accuratus Ceramics Company, which specialized in machinable ceramics for the electronics industry. They sold the business upon their retirement in 1983. They enjoyed family, travel and community work in their retirement years.
A history buff, Jean enjoyed reading books and magazines on US history, particularly of the Revolutionary War and Civil War periods. She and Jay belonged to several historical societies and other history-related organizations over the years, and particularly enjoyed attending re-enactments of Civil War battles.
