Jeanette Pegg Smith, age 92 years, died Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Country Arch Care Center in Union Township, NJ.
Born to Edward and Edna (Hewitt) Pegg on April 28, 1925 at their home near Sergeantsville, NJ, Jeanette lived in that house her entire life.
Jeanette was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Leavitt Smith in 2000. Jeanette is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Suzanne and Robert Baker of Sergeantsville, Linda and William Fleming of Sergeantsville, and Karen and Ralph Hansen of Newark, DE. Jeanette is also survived by her five grandchildren: Jeanne Babiez, Kathlene and Karl Pittenger, Wendy Hansen, Aaron Baker, and Scott Hansen, and eight great-grandchildren: Timothy Pittenger, Garrett Babiez, Jacob Pittenger, Samantha Babiez, Shawn Pittenger, Jayden Baker, Johnathan Pittenger, and Emily Baker.
Jeanette graduated from Lambertville High School in 1943. She worked as a bank teller at the Amwell Bank in Lambertville. In 1944 Jeanette married Leavitt, the older brother of her best friend, Ruth.
While raising her children, Jeanette was instrumental in the early years of the Delaware Township School. She served as PTA president and organized many school functions. In her later years Jeanette served as president of the Delaware Township Seniors group.
Jeanette was an active member of the Sergeantsville United Methodist Church for more than sixty years. Over that time she served as Sunday school teacher, church Treasurer, Trustee, and held many positions in the United Methodist Women’s group. Jeanette was known for organizing church dinners and loved working with her church friends.
It was at the Sergeantsville Post Office that Jeanette became best known by her community. She worked there as a window clerk for more than 44 years. She was often one of the first to welcome new residents to Sergeantsville and formed many lasting friendships.
Funeral services for Jeanette will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Sergeantsville United Methodist Church, 624 Rosemont Ringoes Rd., Stockton NJ 08559. Interment will follow in Rosemont Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ.
