Jerald Page Stowell, age 82 years, formerly of Delaware Township, NJ, died on Sunday, April 25, 2010, in the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
he was born June 9, 1927 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of the late Harry Raymond and Inez Irene Page Stowell.
He was a 1935 graduate of the Western Michigan College of Education and receieved a Master's degree in Public Health from Yale University in 1962.
Warren P. Cooper, Jerald's partner of more than forty years, died in 2004.
Jerald was an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR) who worked in hospitals and rehabilitation centers in New Haven, CT, New York, NY, and Philadelphia, PA. He had a special gift for treating children with bone and muscle developmental problems by incorporating art therapy and small plant husbandry into his therapy program. He taught occupational therapy at Harcum College, Bryn Mawr, PA.
Jerald was a nationally known bonsai expert. For many years, he was a director of The National Bonsai Foundation, Inc., Washington, DC. He received the 1997 American Bonsai Society Distinguished Achievement Award. He studied bonsai under the Japanese masters Yoshimura and Murata. He wrote and illustrated several adult and children's books on bonsai and taught bonsai courses in Bucks County Community College. His bonsai display and Japanese garden at his Delaware Township home drew knowledgeable visitors from around the world.
Jerald's brothers, Armand Jay Stowell and Harold Delmar Stowell also pre-deceased him. He is survived by nephews and nieces in Michigan
Funeral arrangements and interment will be private under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
