Joan Callahan, age 90 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 in the Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Butler, PA, June 30, 1924, daughter of the late Morgan J. and Loretta Askey Callahan, she had resided in Hunterdon County, NJ since the early 1940's.
A United States Navy veteran of World War II, Joan was honorably discharged in May of 1946 at the rank of Yeoman Second Class. She then went on to work for many years as a legal secretary for the law firm of Large, Scammell & Danziger, Flemington, NJ.
Joan was a faithful and longtime communicant of St. Magdalen Church, Flemington, NJ where she served as a trustee, was an extraordinary minister, was part of the Serra Club, served on the building committee, was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and served on many other various committees throughout the years. She was most fond of cooking Sunday morning breakfast for the clergy. She was also active with the Carmelite Monastery, Flemington, NJ. Her faith is what guided her to try and do good with whomever she came in contact with and, no matter what, she always kept her great sense of humor.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Earl Cosh, as well as two nephews, Alan Garay and the Rev. Edward Garay.
Surviving are a sister, Donna Garay of Branchburg, NJ; many devoted nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ, 08822 under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Everyone is kindly asked to meet directly at the church on Friday morning. Entombment with military honors will follow in St. Magdalen Mausoleum, North Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
