Johanna Maria de Groot died on January 1, 2010 at Hospice VNA of St. Luke's in Bethlehem, PA. Not only was she very brave and optimistic throughout her illness, Johanna never lost her sense of humor or zest for life. She was 81.
Johanna Maria van Dijk de Groot was born January 31, 1928 in Den Haag, the Netherlands to Johanna Kloor and Gijsbertus van Dijk. It was shortly after WWII that she married her husband, Theodore Cornelius de Groot, and emigrated first to Canada and then to the US to eventually settle in Hunterdon County with their five children where they resided for over thirty years before moving to Pen Argyl in 2002.
Johanna studied fashion design in the Netherlands and worked as a runway model in Canada. While living in Hunterdon County, she was not only a homemaker but served as a 4-H leader and volunteered at the Lyon's VA Hospital. Johanna was a member of the Hunterdon Garden Club and was an avid gardener as well as a very gifted quilter. Johanna also belonged to two Dutch coffee clubs and enjoyed greatly her monthly meetings and social gatherings with other Dutch and American friends. She was adventuresome and loved traveling, and together with her husband of 61 years, enjoyed frequent trips abroad.
Johanna will be sadly missed by her husband, Theodore; her children; Wil de Groot and his wife Sandy of Frenchtown, NJ; Lydia Glennon and her husband Matthew of Pen Argyl, PA; Walter de Groot and his wife Jackie of Setauket, NY; Ermelindis de Groot and her partner Ed Gregan of Frenchtown, NJ, and Jerome de Groot and his partner Penny Pennington of Jupiter, FL; her grandchildren, Nicole Glennon, Kielty Glennon, Matthew Glennon, Veronique de Groot, Eric de Groot, Alexander de Groot, Sameul de Groot, Lucinda de Groot and Ethan de Groot and her great-grandchild, Kellen Hildebrand. She is also sadly missed by her sister Dori, brothers Frans and Bert and their spouses, all residing in the Netherlands, and many friends that Johanna has come to know over her lifetime.
