John P. Duffy, age 80 years, a resident of the NJ Fireman’s Home, Boonton, NJ, died Sunday, January 18, 2009, in St. Clare’s Hospital, Denville, NJ.

Born in Elizabeth, NJ son of the late James and Hannah Bonner Duffy, John formerly resided in Ringoes, NJ, Little Egg Harbor Township, NJ, and Whiting Township until moving to the Fireman’s Home.

He was a graduate of St. Mary’s School, Elizabeth, NJ and Drake Business School.

John served in the United States Army from 1946-1947 during the occupation of Japan following the end of World War II.

He was a member of the Elizabeth Fire Department joining in 1953 and retiring as a Captain from the department in 1980. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, FNBA Local of Elizabeth, NJ and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Tuckerton, NJ.

His wife of fifty-one years, Jane Bellis Duffy, died in 2003 and his daughter, Joan Duffy, died in 1997.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Rosann and Gary Jacoby of Little Egg Harbor, NJ and Laura and Richard Bay of Raritan Township, NJ; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Christopher and Susan Duffy of Kingwood Township, NJ, Sean and Laura Duffy of Washington, NJ, and Dennis Duffy of Whiting, NJ; two sisters, Grace Maher of Lakewood, NJ and Ann Ehrhardt of Lakewood, NJ; two brothers, James Duffy of Lakewood, NJ and Donald E. Duffy of Greenbrook, NJ; eleven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine St., Flemington, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Amwell Ridge Cemetery, Ringoes, NJ. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home.
