John Kurzenberger, a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished friend, passed away on October 8, 2024, at the age of 95 in Piscataway, New Jersey. Born on February 22, 1929, in Delaware Township, New Jersey, John devoted his life to farming and animal care, exemplifying a strong work ethic that highlighted his character.
John's career spanned several roles within the agricultural sector, where he not only worked on his own farms but also contributed his skills to companies such as Vis-Queen, CIBA, Bristol-Myers-Squibb, and Ortho, ensuring the well-being of livestock and the smooth operation of the farms. With a passion for machinery, he enjoyed rebuilding farm tractors, reflecting his love for hands-on work and innovation.
John proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954 on an aircraft carrier, a chapter of his life that shaped him into the wholesome man of few words that he was known to be. His dedication and commitment were evident both in his military service and throughout his life.
In his leisure time, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a deep affection for taking care of barn cats and creating beautiful wooden pieces with his lathe. His craftsmanship brought to life bowls and birdhouses, providing warmth and character to his home. Additionally, he indulged his intellectual curiosity by studying history and often immersed himself in reading numerous history books. In his later years, he found comfort in watching reruns of beloved Westerns such as Gunsmoke, Rawhide, and Wagon Train.
John's family was his pride and joy, and he cherished each moment spent with them. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Ann Kurzenberger; daughter, Susan Kurzenberger; granddaughters, Mallory Lucas, Sara Lucas, and Allison McLarty; great-granddaughters, Khloe Neall, Bailey Neall, Amari Robinson, Delana Robinson, and Malachi Robinson; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Myers Kurzenberger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Helen Rauter Kurzenberger; his brother, Paul Kurzenberger Jr.; and his son, Eric Kurzenberger.
Funeral service for John officiated by the Rev. Robert DiSalvio will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow with Military Honors in Lower Amwell Cemetery in Delaware Township NJ. Calling hours will be on Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
