John Robert Van Stone, age 94, died Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation and Care Center in Clinton Township NJ.
Born August 16, 1926, in Brooklyn NY, John was the son of the late Albert and Pearl (Friedman) Van Stone. He was raised in Brooklyn, before joining the United States Navy during World War II from 1944 through 1946. He would re-enlist in the Navy in 1950 and served in the Korean War on the USS Valley Forge until his honorable discharge in 1954.
After his honorable service to his country, John moved to New Providence NJ, where he lived most of his life until moving to Flemington more than eighteen years ago.
John worked for many years as a Purchasing Agent for Reheis Chemical Co. in Berkeley Heights NJ.
John’s Catholic faith was very important to him and he was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Summit Council #783 and was it’s past Grand Knight twice. He also was a past Faithful Navigator of the Watchung Assembly in Scotch Plains. John was a long-time usher at Our Lady of Peace Church in New Providence.
John was a “people person” and loved socializing and being the Bingo caller at Our Lady of Peace Church for many years and continued while in that role at Rolling Hills Care Center.
In addition to his parents, John was pre-deceased by his wife, Marilyn D. Van Stone in 2010, his two brothers, Joseph and Raymond Van Stone, and his three sisters, Mary Strange, Dorothea Smith, and Frances Van Stone. John is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Thomas Carfagno of Flemington NJ, and his three granddaughters, Katie, Julia and Sara Carfagno.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, September 28, 2020 at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington NJ. Interment will follow in St. Teresa of Avila Cemetery, 128 County Road 649 (Passaic Avenue), Summit NJ 07901. Calling hour will be from 9:30 to 10:30 am at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John's name may be made to Rolling Hills Care Center, 16 Cratetown Road, Lebanon, NJ 08833.
