John W. Canary, Sr.
Avid Golfer, Honorary Member of Plainfield Country Club
John W. Canary, Sr., age 97 years, of Whitehouse Station, NJ, died Saturday September 2, 2006 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township, NJ. He was born on May 5, 1909 in Plainfield, NJ and educated in the Plainfield school system.
John also resided in Dunellen, North Branch, and Whiting, NJ. He worked at Art Color Printing Company for 43 years until the business moved to Chicago in 1968. He then joined the original staff of Somerset County College, where he was in charge of purchasing, and remained until his retirement in 1974. He has been a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses for 32 years.
John began caddying at Plainfield Country Club in 1918 at the age of 9 which began his love for golf. He eventually became assistant caddy master which led to his honorary membership to the club in 2004 at the age of 95. He was a champion golfer at the Art Color Printing Company and also achieved a double eagle and a hole in one at Green Knoll Golf Course.
Anna Satanik Canary, his first wife, died in 1974. Helen Olson Veneziano Canary, his second wife, died in 1998. John was predeceased by his parents Irene Anderson Canary Farley and John A. Canary, brothers Fred and James Canary, sisters Nina Waltz and Harriet Sandbeck, and great grandson Timothy Canary, Jr.
He is survived by a son John W. Canary Jr. and Gayle of Martinsville, 3 grandchildren, John W. Canary, III and Joanna of Bernardsville, Amy Canary Richards and Stephen of Green Brook, Timothy Canary and Wendy of Watchung, 4 great grandchildren Andrew and Ryan Richards, Alexis and Matthew Canary. His loving step family are as follows: George and Lois Brobst, Deanna Kinney, Jane and Bruce Amerman, grandchildren Deborah and Gregory Brobst, Diane Trenery, Jeffrey and Ronald Hayes, Marilyn Hodgson, Dennis and John Amerman, great grandchildren, Morgan, Sean and Catherine Hayes, William, Mark, Niki and Brad Amerman, Dawn Ruthe and Lindsay Hodgson, great great grandchildren Jackson and Logan Ruthe.
Arrangements by Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Visiting hours: Tuesday Sept. 5 from 7pm to 9pm and funeral service: Wednesday Sept. 6 at 11:30am.
