John Wengryn, age 83 years, of Pittstown, NJ (Franklin Township, Hunterdon County), passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones at Hunterdon Medical Center, Rariatn Township, NJ on Friday, March 30, 2007.
Born in Hillsborough Township, NJ, February 29, 1924, the fourth of ten children of Eva and Peter Wengryn, he grew up and worked on his family farm.
He was a 1942 graduate of Somerville High School and as a youth was active in 4-H, receiving numerous state and national awards.
John was an avid square dancer traveling across the state to attend dances. He received a full scholarship to Rutgers University, but was unable to attend due to World War II.
In 1954, John and his wife, Patricia, started WenHall Farm, a fifty cow herd of holsteins, in North Branch, NJ until 1969 when he and his family moved to Pittstown, NJ where they farmed and raised angus cattle. John also raised pheasants for release.
During the 1960's and 1970's, he was a volunteer 4-H leader for Hunterdon and Somerset counties. For over forty years, he taught raising and showing dairy and beef cattle and for twenty-seven years, he was Head Groundskeeper at Raritan Valley Community College. Active in Franklin Township's Open Space and Agricultural Committees, he was also a member of the American Angus Association.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Patricia Hall Wengryn; a son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Velma Wengryn of Pleasanton, Iowa; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jacqueline Wengryn of Pittstown, NJ and Susan Wengryn Posbergh and Kevin Posbergh of Branchburg, NJ; seven grandchildren, Erin and Chris Posbergh of Branchburg, NJ, Katie, Alison, Sam and Mara Wengryn of Pleasanton, Iowa and Tamara Hatfield of Cedar Creek, TX; three brothers, Peter Wengryn of Somerville, NJ, George Wengryn of Ringoes, NJ and Daniel Wengryn of Hillsborough, NJ; and two sisters, Lillian Phillips of Middlebush, NJ and Mary Wengryn of Hillsborough, NJ.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ.
