Joseph Horvath was born July 08, 1925 in Hunterdon County, NJ. Was the son of Frank and Ethel Horvath, both deceased. He was married to the former Irene Hommer who predeceased him Feb. 1996. He served the United States of America for over 35 years.Joe attended elementary school and junior high school in Flemington, NJ and high school at Chelsea Vocational in Manhattan, N.Y.C.
He was a WW II veteran U.S. Army September '43 to Aug '47 having served in the 16th TankBN as a tank gunner in France, Germany and Czeckoslovakia. His unit was involved in the liberation of Pilsen, Czeckoslovakia from the German Army in May 1945.
After the surrender of German Forces in May 1945 his unit was moved to the mountain region known as the "Sudetenland" border region of Germany and Czeckoslovakia and were part of the Security and Occupation forces. He was among the many troops returned to the U. S. and re-assigned to the 5th division at Fort Campbell, KY for training and for the invasion of Japan. Fortunately for the U.S. Japan surrendered. He remained in the army until Honorable discharge in Aug '47 with the rank of "T/4" (Techician 4th grade).
In Oct '47 he enlisted in the N.J. National Guard Unit in Fleming, N.J.. He was employed byN. J. Dept. of Defence for 31 years as a Unit Adminstrator and Support Tech which was "Full Time Duty" in his unit until his retirement 01 April '79.
Army service awards received : American Campaign, Europe Campaign w/1- "Battle Star", Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal. National Guard Service Awards: Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Reserve Achievement Medal. Honorable Service Award, Merit Award. Honorable Discharge with Rank of 1st. SGT. During service in National Guard was member of the NJ Pistol Team and participated in many matches which included several annual national matches at Camp Perry, OH.
He and his wife owned and Operated "Bark Shanty Farm" for many years and raised and sold beef cattle. At the time of his entry into WW II service he was employed at the Foran Foundry Co., in Flemington, NJ as a mixing machine operator and moulders helper.
He was a member of 16th Armored Div. Assoc. WW II, National Rifle Assoc., Odin Grange #1254, retired reserve US Army, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #14000, American Legion Post #945.His church attendance was at the United Methodist Church in Austin, PA.
For many years he had been a hunter of small game, turkey and deer and also enjoyed target shooting and "plinking" at tin cans.
Much loved for his sense of humor, storytelling, generosity and love of family. He will be greatly missed.Children surviving are Sharen (Jay D. Roush)) Horvath, Port Allegany, PA, Lorie F. Kuhar, Glen Gardner, NJ, and Kim G. (Sgt. Brent) Ingram, Florence, CO, seven grandchildren, four-great-grandchildren, sister in-law, Yolanda Horvath of Ringoes, NJ, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene, son, Jay Joseph Horvath, brothers, Alex, Frank, and Michael Horvath sisters, Irene Dissler, Anna Davis, Ethel Lyons, and Gizzella Storr.
A memorial service for both Joseph and his son, Jay Joseph Horvath will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2013 in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be at a later date in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
