Josephine Betts Jefferson, age 95 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Saturday, August 23, 2008, in Independence Manor, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Summit, NJ, October 15, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Cortland Betts, who was the former Senior Partner in the New York law firm of Shearman and Stirling and the founder of Copper Hill Country Club, and the late Josephine Johnson Betts.
A resident of Raritan Township, NJ, for over seventy years, she was a graduate of the Dearborn-Morgan School, Orange, NJ, and attended Bradford Junior College, Bradford, MA.
In 1932, she married Clyde C. Jefferson, former New Jersey State Legislator and Hunterdon County Prosecutor who died in 1974. A homemaker, she was a member of the Flemington Baptist Church, an honorary member and former President of the Flemington Womans Club, member of the Colonel Lowrey Chapter of the D.A.R., Flemington, NJ, and was a longtime volunteer at the Hunterdon Medical Center.
In recent years, she spent many winters in Sarasota, FL.
In addition to her husband, she was pre-deceased by two sisters and two brothers; Helen Louise Betts, Elizabeth B. Logue, Henry B. Betts, and Cortland Betts, Jr. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Ann A. and Forrest W. Barnes of Houlton, ME; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard G. and Priscilla Jefferson of Clinton Township, NJ; six grandchildren: Robert Charles Barnes of Silverthorne, CO, Thomas Putnam Barnes of Augusta, ME, Andrew Ferris Barnes of Wilton, ME, Jonathan Keith Jefferson of San Diego, CA, Timothy Brian Jefferson of Flemington, NJ, and Richard G. Jefferson of Lexington, SC; and three great grandchildren: Hannah Genevieve Jefferson, Andrew Jonathan Jefferson, and Aden Eldridge Barnes.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 11 AM in the Flemington Baptist Church, 170 Main Street, Flemington, NJ, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 10-11 AM in the church.
