The following column she wrote perfectly encapsulates everything that brought her joy in life. It was titled...
"A gift of time, kids and horses" The Bernardsville News, Thursday, May 25, 2000
The only gift I really wanted for Mother's Day was to go out to the barn, and with no time constraints, ride my horse.
With many other obligations I haven't been taking the time to ride as much as I'd like. But lately, I've realized that nothing makes me happier and relieves stress better than time spent with my horse. All my problems seem to be put in their proper perspective and when I leave the barn it's with an entirely different frame of mind.
As I headed out Route 78 with my 11-year-old daughter, Kristin, and 6-year-old son, Christopher, in tow, I looked at my watch thinking that we'd left much later than I had planned and already counted out what time we'd be arriving back home.
The 30-minute ride was much more pleasant than usual as we ended up playing games with Latin words and their definitions. Now this was unusual in itself since Latin isn't exactly my daughter's favorite subject. But we all had fun guessing at the answers.
The trip seemed to be over in a matter of moments, and when we got to the barn, I didn't really care what time it was or when we'd be getting home. I just thought nothing could be nicer than a ride in the field with my daughter on her pony.
As we were riding, she told me she didn't have a store-bought gift for me and hoped I'd like what she made. She didn't realize that the best gift of all was riding with her on a spectacular day through a beautiful field, talking and enjoying our time together. As I watched a pony, a young girl, and a little boy all having fun together in a field I thought how special this day turned out for all of us.
