Katherine T. Bellis, 96, died July 21, 2008 at the Life Care Center in Colorado Springs.
She was born Sept. 3, 1911 in Ringoes, NJ to Madge and Fred Totten. She was married to Norman P. Bellis in 1938 and lived in NJ until 2006 when she moved to Colorado with her daughter.
She was a 1928 graduate of Flemington High School, earned a teaching certificate from Trenton Normal School in 1930, a B.S. in Education in 1959, and an M.A. in Elementary Education in 1965, both from Trenton State College. Her long teaching history included two years at Wertsville and twelve years at Mount Arlington two-room school houses and 22 years at the Hackettstown Public Schools as a Mathematics teacher to the eighth graders.
She was an active member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Hackettstown, NJ, especially enjoying participating in the Senior Handbell choir. She served several terms as President of the Warren County Retired Teachers Association, and was recognized for her community volunteerism. She was inducted into the Hackettstown Senior Hall of Fame in 1999. Her passions included travel both in the USA and internationally.
Katherine was pre-deceased by her parents, six brothers, and one sister. Her husband, Norman passed away in 1978, as did an infant son, David in 1949. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Dyer-Weissman, son-in-law, Melvyn Weissman, her son, Jonathan Bellis, daughter-in-law, Virginia Gwynn, one granddaughter, five grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. No one could have asked for a more supportive and caring mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, and teacher. Her values, kindness, and strength inspired everyone whose life she touched.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Larison’s Corner Presbyterian Church, Ringoes, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will take place thereafter at the Amwell Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. in the Church.
