Kenneth Robert Shepperd

Kenneth Robert Shepperd, age 95, died Monday, July 18, 2016, at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township, NJ.  He resided in Franklin Township NJ all of his life.  Born July 5, 1921, in Quakertown NJ, Ken was the son of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Hanna) Shepperd.  He worked on his family farm and at Westinghouse in Bloomfield NJ, until his enlistment in the United States Marine Corps in 1942 after the invasion at Pearl Harbor.  He was a Rifle Marksman and a member of the 1st Marine War Dog Platoon and, with his loyal Doberman, "Sparky," served as a scout for campaigns in Bougainville, Guam and Okinawa.   After his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Ken worked as a self-employed painter and paperhanger.  He retired from NJ Department of Corrections at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility as a Foreman Painter.  He was a member of the VFW in Flemington, the Marine Corps League, a founding member of the Quakertown Recreation Club, and a former member of the Quakertown Fire Company.    An avid outdoorsman, Ken was a longtime fisherman, hunter and trapper. He was a student of American History; he loved to read, especially pieces written about the US Civil War. Ken and his wife, Margaret, loved to spend time in their vegetable garden and to travel, especially in the Northwestern USA, including favorite places like Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Alaska.  They also enjoyed taking trips to Amish country and the Gettysburg Battlefield in Pennsylvania.  He most enjoyed the time spent laughing with his grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents and his four siblings, Clarence, Hazel, Roy and Grace, he is survived by his wife of over 68 years, Margaret (Orban) Shepperd, his three sons, Glenn Shepperd of Washington NJ, Gary and Sharon Shepperd of Ringoes NJ, and Mark and Brenda Shepperd of King of Prussia PA.  He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Allison Shepperd of Denver CO, Gregory Shepperd of Aurora CO, Anthony and Nicholas Shepperd both of King of Prussia PA.    Memorial services will be held at 11:30 am, Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.  Cremation and interment in Locust Grove Cemetery will be private.  Visitation will be from 11 am until the time of service at the funeral home.    Donations in Ken's memory may be made to the Quakertown Fire Company, PO Box 34, Pittstown, NJ 08867.    For further information or to leave an online condolence, please visit www.holcombefisher.com .
