Laura E. Fenwick Klima died peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 15, 2021. Born on July 29, 1930 in Somerville, New Jersey, she was the first child of George E. and Laura (Watson) Van Nuys.
She graduated from Flemington High School in 1948 and from the Mercer Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. On July 12, 1952, she married Raymond D. Fenwick. Together, they built the home in Neshanic Station where she has lived since 1954. Over the decades, this home was the scene of frequent gatherings of friends and family, all of whom were welcomed with her warm hospitality and wonderful cooking. Laura was known for her canning and for her baking, especially pies. Following Ray's death on June 28, 1966, Laura devoted herself to raising her three young children. She married Vencels Klima on April 1, 1975. He died on April 6, 2005.
Laura worked as a nurse in various capacities, including being on staff at the opening of Hunterdon Medical Center, working in the office of Dr. John Fritz and serving as a school nurse at the Midland School in North Branch for more than 25 years, retiring in 1995.
She was an active member and served as an Elder of the Clover Hill Reformed Church and was a Somerset County 4-H member and leader for many years. In addition to cooking, Laura enjoyed sewing, quilting, cross-stitch, and travel. Her home was a happy sanctuary for her grandchildren, a place of love, nurturing and a cookie jar that was always full.
In addition to her husbands, Ray and Vence, Laura was predeceased by her brothers, George E. Van Nuys, Jr. and John Van Nuys.
She is survived by her children Amy (Russell) Fenwick Frank of Neshanic Station, Paul (Constance) Fenwick of Hillsborough, Rebecca (Jeffrey) Fenwick Riehl of Flagtown, Modris Klima of Stockton, Mara (Peter) Zeltkalns of East Windsor, Ilse (Robert) Thomas of Selbyville, DE and daughter-in-law Nancy Klima of Flemington, her grandchildren Lauren Hummel, Melissa Klima, Jennifer and Elizabeth Frank, Charles and Sarah Fenwick and Laura Radcliff and great-grandchildren Tyler, Christopher, Gavin, Emersyn and Avery Hummel. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Evelyn Van Nuys, brother-in-law Ronald Tharp, sister-in-law Joyce Hanley, "forever friend" Marie Klein, brother William Van Nuys and many beloved nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 19, 2021, at 10:00AM in the Clover Hill Reformed Church, 890 Amwell Road, Hillsborough Township, NJ. Burial will follow in Neshanic Cemetery under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. There will be no calling hours.
