Lorlyn Mae Covert, affectionately known as Sam Covert, died Saturday, January 23, 2021, at the Bridgeway Care and Rehabilitation Center at Hillsborough, NJ.
Born January 25, 1923, in Neshanic, NJ, Sam was the daughter of the late Edward E. Lake and Eva Danberry Lake. She was a lifelong resident of Neshanic and Neshanic Station. She married Irving "Skip" R. Covert on January 25, 1942, and lived the remainder of her life as a homemaker in Neshanic Station.
During World War II, she worked in the family business, J.S. Covert & Sons, while Skip was in the Pacific Theatre. She also enjoyed working in the plant nursery with her friends at John Vermeulen & Sons.
Sam was a graduate of Somerville High School and was a long-time active member of the Neshanic Reformed Church where she was a Deacon, sang in the choir, and made the church’s beautiful Advent wreath for Christmas each year. Known for her green thumb, she was also a long-time active member of the Neshanic Garden Club and was still winning blue ribbons when she was 96 years old! In addition, she was a member of the Neshanic Volunteer Fire Company’s Ladies Auxiliary.
Lorlyn loved her family and her home and was always willing to help us whenever we needed her. Her great-grandchildren were especially the apple of her eye. She was an outstanding cook and was still hosting family gatherings well into her 80’s. Her pot roast, Dutch Apple pie, chicken casserole, deviled and pickled eggs and many other dishes were enjoyed at many family gatherings.
She was also well loved by all of the family dogs who greeted her eagerly when she would visit. She always arrived at our homes with a bag full of treats for them and continued to delight them as she slipped them morsels of meat from the dinner table.
She was proud to have lived in her home on her own until just a few months ago. We will miss her sharp wit, strong will, and one-liners but most of all, we will miss our loving Mom and Grandmother who was always there for us.
She was pre-deceased by her husband of seventy-one years, Irving "Skip" R. Covert, who died in 2013.
She is survived by her son, James S. Covert, and his wife, Joyce; her two granddaughters, Chris Yap and her husband, Jon, and Kelly Batori, and her husband, Scott; and her adored three great-grandchildren, Brien Batori, Morgan Yap and Eric Batori.
Private graveside services will be held at Neshanic Cemetery, Neshanic, NJ, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Neshanic Reformed Church, 715 Amwell Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844 or the Neshanic Volunteer Fire Company, PO Box 633, Neshanic Station, NJ 08853.
