Lorraine C. Schroedel, age 86, died Sunday, August 11, 2024 at the Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township NJ.
Born November 10, 1937 in Garfield NJ, Lorraine was the daughter of the late Steve and Mary (Talitsche) Szilasi . At the age of 3, she moved to Leffler Hill Road in Raritan Township NJ where she has lived since. She graduated from Flemington High School in the class of 1955.
Lorraine worked for many years at the former Flemington National Bank, retiring as the Loan Department Manager. A completely selfless person, she gave her time after retirement to the Flemington Food Pantry, where she donated her time for more than 20 years to help distribute food and other services to those in need. Lorraine began making pillow cases for children and adolescent cancer patients to help ease their troubles, which provided an entrée to and passion for sewing quilts, most of which have been given away to those in need.
In addition to her volunteer work, Lorraine was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader while her children were growing up. Her faith in God was a constant presence in her life - she was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Flemington for more than 60 years where she also served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Lorraine loved to keep a vegetable and flower garden at her home, despite the attempts from the local deer population to curb her bounties! She enjoyed baking special treats and cooking favorite meals while also trying many new recipes for her family to sample. One of her pastimes was decorating her home for the holidays, whether it was Easter, Halloween, 4th of July, or her favorite, Christmas. She had a knack for making sure that everyone attending the Christmas celebration had gifts to be opened and shared with the others. Until recently, she continued to dye eggs at Easter, even for her grown children and others to enjoy!
Lorraine met the love of her life, William G. Schoedel and the two loved to travel, taking memorable camping trips across the United States, especially favorite trips to Lake Champlain in Vermont where Lorraine and Will spent time with their family.
She had an excellent memory and could recall many details from long-ago adventures and was a collector of many precious things. In her collections were several Pez dispensers and M&M figures, as well as her prized collection of Angel figurines. A lifetime learner, Lorraine loved to read and could speak intelligently on many subjects based upon her excellent recollection skills. Most important to Lorraine was the time spent with her family, with whom she treasured every day.
In addition to her parents, Lorraine was predeceased by her sister, Mary Anne. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, William G. Schroedel, her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and John Weibel of Afton NY, her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Marcy Schroedel of Flemington NJ, her two grandsons and their wives, Daniel and Jeni Metch and Jacob and Mary Kate Metch, her three great-grandsons, Wyatt, Colton and Levi Metch, as well as her niece, Gabriella Stockton, several special family members, and the “Friday Night Dinner” friends in recent years.
