FRENCHTOWN - Mable R. Lewis, age 89, died Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at her home in Frenchtown where she’s lived for more than 56 years.
Born November 19, 1926, in Wickatunk (Monmouth County) NJ, Mable was the daughter of the late Wilbur F. and Mabel R. (Smock) Sprague. As a child of the Great Depression, she moved frequently until settling in her home in Frenchtown in 1960. In her 40’s, Mable completed the requirements for her GED, an accomplishment she was quite proud of.
A homemaker, Mable was a practical woman and a perfectionist. She was an accomplished seamstress, fashioning many of the clothes for her five children, and she spent endless hours tending to her flower and vegetable garden, making all sorts of fruit jams and canning many of the items picked fresh from her garden.
For many years, Mable would quilt pillows and showcase them at local fairs, often winning prizes for her talents. In her free time, Mable would use oil and watercolors to paint landscapes and still life subjects.
Mable was an animal lover, especially her love for cats, and she often sheltered many cats at her home.
The family would like to acknowledge the outstanding care Mable received from Hunterdon Hospice, especially Nurse Joanne Halder and Nurse’s Aide, Carolyn Whitfield.
In addition to her parents, Mable is predeceased by her late husband, Paul V. Lewis Sr. in 1993, as well as her siblings, Frank and Walter Sprague and Annette Phillips. She is survived by her five children, Paul V. Lewis Jr., Jeanne R. Bennett, Rebecca A. Salvi, Daniel E. Lewis, Randall H. Lewis and her daughter-in-law, Annette Glynos, as well as her sister, Evelyn Shoemaker, her nineteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Upper Tinicum Lutheran Church, 188 Upper Tinicum Church Road, Upper Black Eddy, PA 18972. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Calling hour will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Memorial donations in Mable’s memory may be made to Hunterdon Hospice, 2100 Wescott Road, Flemington NJ 08822
