Margaret M. Lutz of Flemington, NJ left this world on March 19, 2020. Margaret was born May 21, 1938 in Elizabeth, NJ to Joseph and Anne Franey Durkin, the second of three daughters. She was a graduate of Saint Mary’s in Elizabeth.
She married John L. Lutz, also of Elizabeth on September 14, 1957. Margaret worked for Bell Telephone until she became a mother. Eventually she became a partner in John L. Lutz Welding and Fabricating, Inc., originally of Union, NJ and then of Frenchtown, NJ, when Margaret and John purchased a 1730’s stone farmhouse in the early 1970’s and refurbished it. The family kept horses, ponies, cattle, rabbits, cats, some wild animals and many dogs including Margaret’s beloved Irish Setters.
Margaret’s passion was primitive rug hooking. She was an active member of the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists (ATHA) and owner of the Hook Nook of Flemington, NJ, producing her own rugs, selling supplies and teaching her craft at the Princeton YMCA and The Spinnery in Three Bridges. She also co-wrote several books on the subject.
Margaret was very active in her community. She was a Kingwood Rescue Squad volunteer, eventually becoming captain of the squad in the 1980’s.
A Hunterdon Hospice volunteer, Margaret also donated her time to working at the gift shop in Hunterdon Medical Center.
Margaret attended St. Magdalen’s in Flemington, was a Eucharistic minister, assisted with CCD classes and in the making of embroidered Baptismal bibs.
Margaret was predeceased by her only son John and her sister Maureen. She is survived by daughters Mary Ann Lutz of Indianapolis, IN, Dr. Margaret M. Lutz (m. Michael Zimmerman) of Milford, PA and Patricia Barabas (m. James Barabas) of Flemington, NJ and her sister Mary Shea of New Canaan, CT. She dearly loved her seven grandchildren Denise, Adam, Martha, Kyla, Abby, Amanda and Ondrea. She took great joy in her family and loved hosting family gatherings. Her door was always open.
