Margaret Szweda

Margaret Szweda (Leili), born January 14, 1935, died comfortably at home on April 4, 2023.

“Margie” was born in Romania. During World War II, she had to flee her home with her parents and siblings. Over the course of several years, they traveled through Austria, Hungary and Germany before coming to live in the U.S. She was 16 years old when she arrived and spent most of her life living in the northern New Jersey area, settling in Butler for the last 22 years of her life.

Margie greatly enjoyed nature and the outdoors and spent happy times tending to her vegetable garden and flowers. She also loved animals and adored caring for her pet cats and parakeets throughout her life. She also liked to cook, especially European dishes she learned from her mother and Ukrainian foods that were her husband’s favorites.

She was a devout Jehovah’s Witness for the last 50 years, and while living in Butler, she was a member of the Pompton Lakes Kingdom Hall congregation.

She was predeceased by her husband Andrew Szweda (3/30/1924 – 11/6/1999).

She is survived by her daughter, Susanna Peltyszyn, married to John Peltyszyn; two granddaughters, Caitlin Peltyszyn, and Karen Curry (Peltyszyn), married to David Curry; and a great-grandson, Jack Curry. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Martin Leili, married to Gloria (Sereni) Leili, of Virginia, along with many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will take place on Thursday, April 6, 2023, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Funeral services will be Friday, April 7, 2023, at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. The services will also be available via livestream by clicking here .  Interment, with her late husband, will be private at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Capner Street, Flemington, NJ.
