Margarita "Maggie" Maldonado (62) of Florence, NJ passed away in her home on Tuesday, February 1st, 2022.
Born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico on March 16th, 1959, Maggie was the daughter of Maria Oliva Maldonado and the late Francisco Maldonado. The early years of Maggie’s life were spent in the central mountains of Puerto Rico until her family moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1964.
A graduate of Pace University with a master’s degree from Seton Hall University, Maggie spent many happy years teaching the Spanish language and Spanish literature at high schools in Central New Jersey where she left a lasting impact on her students. Maggie was a safe haven, supporter and guiding light for many LGBTQ+ and immigrant students throughout the 30 years in her profession. After retiring in 2020, she spent her final years in Bordentown, NJ.
Maggie was survived by her only child Lin Perez, her mother Maria, her seven other brothers and sisters, Lourdes Viera, Theresa Maldonado, Geraldine Maldonado, Carmen Sepulveda-Lazaro, Daniel Maldonado, Nelson Maldonado and Frank Maldonado and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Maggie Maldonado will be held on Monday, February 7th at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ from 12 - 2pm. Then a ceremony starting at 2pm followed by procession to Rosemont Cemetery in Rosemont, NJ at 3pm to lay her to rest beginning at 3:30pm.
Please follow vaccination, COVID-19 protocols and wear a mask if planning to attend in person. We ask that everyone celebrate, as Maggie would have wanted, with colorful outfits, pearls and red lipstick in celebration of her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Casa Pueblo https://casapueblo.org, a community-based organization that works to protect natural, cultural, and human resources of Puerto Rico OR Sato Project, https://thesatoproject.org/, a dog rescue focused organization in Puerto Rico. Please make donations in Maggie Maldonado's name.
