Marian H. Fenwick

Marian H. Fenwick, 84, a 62 year resident of Hillsborough, died on June 8th, 2015.

She was born in Baiting Hollow, Long Island, NY to the late Myron and Marian Lyon Cooke Hulse. Her family moved their potato farming business to Cranbury, New Jersey in 1933. She lived in Cranbury until she moved to Hillsborough in 1953, newly wed to her husband George Ezekiel Fenwick. George passed away on June 15, 1982, at the age of 57.

Marian was a nurse by trade for 5o years. She graduated nursing school and passed the Registered Nurses Boards in 1950.

During her 62 years in Hillsborough, Marian was very active in community and government. She served the community of Hillsborough in many different ways, paving the way for women with many firsts. She thought that giving back to the community was of the utmost importance, which is why her nursing career and community work were so important to her.

She served two terms on the Hillsborough Board of Education. She was a member of the Board of Education that built Hillsborough High School on Raider Boulevard. She was the first woman on the Hillsborough Township Committee. In fact she was the only person to concurrently serve on both the Board of Education and the Township Committee. The culmination of her political career was when she became the Mayor of Hillsborough. In fact, she was the first female Mayor of the Township. She was the founding member and President of both the Hillsborough Historical Society and the Friends of the Van der Veer-Harris House. She was a Hillsborough District Committee woman for 60 years. She served on many of the township’s commissions including the Historic Commission, Tree Mitigation Commission, Welfare Board, and the Planning Board. She also served a five year term on the Municipal Utilities Authority, and also on the Somerset County Mental Health Board.

Predeceased by her parents, her husband George Ezekiel Fenwick, and her son, George Ezekiel Fenwick, Jr., Marian is survived by her daughters Robin Bernard, Karen Zitz and Marian Fenwick. She was also survived by grandchildren, George Ezekiel Fenwick III, and Erin Marie Fenwick, as well as her sisters, Caroline Husted and Martha Welsh.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 13, 2015 at the Clover Hill Reformed Church, 890 Amwell Road, Hillsborough, NJ. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Holcombe Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
