Marie J. Richard neé van Polanen Petel died March 29, 2008 at Rolling Hills Care Center in Lebanon, NJ. Born in Tegal, Indonesia in 1920, she was 88. She was predeceased by her husband Armand “Max” Richard and is survived by her daughter Kareen Richard of Piscataway, her son Robert and his wife Helen of Flemington, her daughter Inge and her husband Frank Delaguzzo of Overland Park, Kansas, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

After World War II Mrs. Richard and her young family left Indonesia for the Netherlands where they lived for six years. In 1960 the family emigrated to the United States, and lived first in New York and then in Prospect Park, NJ. She was a member of the Christian Reformed community in North Jersey and when she moved to Flemington she joined the Flemington Presbyterian Church.

As a homemaker Mrs. Richard was an exceptional cook of Indonesian cuisine. She was an avid reader, who, in spite of her limited formal education, mastered three languages. She loved birds and flowers and used her horticultural skills to grow a variety of flowering plants indoors.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Flemington Presbyterian Church, 10 East Main Street, Flemington, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. There will be no calling hours. Please visit www.holcombefisher.com for further information or to send condolences.
