Martin Sobel

Martin Sobel, age 78 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Saturday, June 15, 2019 in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ. Born in Brooklyn, NY, July 25, 1940, he was the son of the late David and Rose Ellman Sobel. He had resided in Hunterdon County for the past forty-six years. Martin received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and was a mechanical engineer for Johnson&Johnson and Ethicon until retiring. He received nearly thirty patents for his work, including one in May of this year. An accomplished musician, he played the banjo and tuba. Martin was as member of the Red Onion Jazz Band, who played regularly at O’Connor’s in Watchung. Martin was also an accomplished woodworker, and his dining room table was featured in Fine Woodworking Magazine. He was a longtime member of the Flemington Jewish Community Center. Surviving are his wife of fifty-four years, Shelly Friedman Sobel; a son, David Sobel, of Flemington, NJ; a daughter and son-in-law, Kate and Michael Schaper, of New York, NY; a sister, Arlene, of Destin, FL; and his grandson Benjamin Schaper. Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 1 PM in Beth Moses Cemetery, Pinelawn, NY under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
