Mary H. Krauss

September 27, 1925 — January 17, 2016

Mary H. Krauss passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, January 17, 2016. She was 90 years old. Mary was born in New Brunswick, NJ. After graduating from New Brunswick High School in three years, Mary entered Trenton State Teachers College (Now The College of New Jersey). Mary would become certified to teach both secondary English and Mathematics.

Mary met the love-of-her-life, John F. Krauss, when he returned to Trenton State from the Pacific Theater of World War II to complete his senior year of college. They were married shortly after their June graduation. John and Mary were married for 46 years until John’s passing in 1992.

When John accepted the job as the band director and music teacher at Flemington High School, the couple moved to Flemington. John and Mary founded the Flemington Summer School of Music in 1946, where Mary served as the Principal.

Mary was the quintessential “Band-Mother.” She was in the stands every week for all of the football games, at every parade, and attended every concert for 40 years. Her support for the music program and her husband was phenomenal.

Mary was also a long-time substitute teacher at Flemington High School and then a permanent substitute in the Mathematics Department at Hunterdon Central High School in Flemington.

After John retired from Hunterdon Central in 1986, the couple and their daughter Mary A. opened the Christmas Carol and Notes-a Plenty gift shops on Fulper Road in Flemington.

Mary was a member of Saint Magdalen’s Roman Catholic Church in Flemington for almost seventy years.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary A. Krauss of Flemington, her son John C. Krauss and his wife, Susan of Rockaway, two grandsons, four great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews throughout the USA, and cousins in America & Germany. She is also survived by her brother–in-law, Paul Krauss (whom she loved as a brother) and his wife, Jean of Toms River, NJ, Jane Sorensen, her dear friend and neighbor for 59 years. Additionally, Mary is survived by over a thousand of her “Band-Kids.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington. Interment will follow in St. Magdalen’s Cemetery, N. Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the John F. Krauss Music Scholarship Fund at Hunterdon Central High School, 84 State Route 31, Flemington, NJ 08822.
