Monica was born on April 30, 1941, to John and Anne Macko in Wilkes-Barre, PA and grew up in nearby Ashley, PA. She was the oldest of their two children, with Steve, her younger brother, who predeceased her in 2008.
Monica graduated from New Brunswick High School in New Jersey in 1959. She first worked as an executive assistant at Ortho Pharmaceutical and later married Anton Gsell on October 19, 1963, at Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Raritan, NJ.
Soon after they were married, they began their family and Monica embarked on her lifelong dream of motherhood. In 1964, the first of their five children, Christopher, was born and he was soon followed by Timothy, Kevin, Monica, and later, Tony. The births of her children brought immeasurable joy to her life. Together, with her husband Tony, they raised their family on the Duke Estate in Somerville, NJ. The years together provided many great memories for the entire family.
While battling through years of health issues, Monica continued to enjoy her family. She was interested in all that was going on in the lives of her children and grandchildren. In fact, she was the ultimate football, baseball, and tennis mom, attending as many games as she could. Additionally, in her spare time, she enjoyed painting on oil canvas; she was truly an amazing artist.
In 2015, Monica was predeceased by her daughter, Monica, better known to all as “Mimi”. Mimi was truly a loyal caretaker for many years to her mother and their love for each other was unconditional.
Monica is survived by her husband of 60 years, Anton Gsell; her children, Christopher and his wife Sharon (Nee) Gsell, Timothy and Carol (Heeney) Gsell, Kevin and Joann (Russo) Gsell, and Tony Gsell; her grandchildren, Cara (Gsell) and Adam Altieri, Jacqueline (Gsell) and Benjamin Hayhow, Bryan, Deirdre, Elizabeth, Kevin, Anna, Eric, and Luke Gsell; as well as four great-grandchildren, Julian, Eloise, Sienna, and Josephine Altieri.
