Muriel M. Stillwell

May 26, 1942 — June 25, 2024

Muriel Mattison Stillwell, age 82 years, of Clinton Township, NJ, former long-time resident of Cokesbury, NJ, passed away at home, the morning of Tuesday, June 25, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Three Bridges, NJ, May 26, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Marie (Bard) Mattison Stryker and Elston Mattison, Sr.

A nearly lifelong Hunterdon County, NJ resident, she grew up in Three Bridges, NJ and was a graduate of Hunterdon Central Regional High School, with the Class of 1960. During the early 1960’s both she and her mother worked as waitresses at the Union Hotel, Main Street, Flemington, NJ. She then earned her teaching degree from Trenton State College.

Muriel taught elementary education for 44 years in the Bridgewater-Raritan Elementary School District, teaching 1st Grade for 41 years.

In her spare time, Muriel enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, and cooking. In fact, she was a fantastic cook, making homemade dishes and desserts. She also especially loved traveling. She ventured all over the world to places like Australia, China, Alaska, Japan, many places in Europe and thoroughly enjoyed her trip to the Matterhorn in Switzerland. Furthermore, she was an avid New York Yankees fan, rooting on her two favorite Yankees, Mickey Mantle as a child, and Derek Jeter later in life.

Her family will remember how she did everything so effortlessly, making the hard things look easy. She gave sound advice, was witty and sarcastic, with a dry sense of humor, coming out with one-liner-quips that would make people burst into laughter. Above all, she was the selfless, “rock of the family”, always there for those she loved.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings: Franklin Mattison, Betty March, and Elston Mattison, Jr.

Surviving are her two daughters, Kendra Stillwell, of Cherry Hill, NJ and Brenna Stillwell, of San Diego, CA; her dear friend, Felicia Ledogar, of Lebanon, NJ; as well as her two feline companions, Ruby and Lily.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregiver, Kate, who showed her dignity, respect, love, and commitment during the last 3 years of her illness.

A gathering and life celebration will take place privately under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822. Burial will follow in the family plot at Three Bridges Cemetery, Main Street, Three Bridges, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Muriel’s name may be made to Tabby’s Place, 1100 US Highway 202, Ringoes, NJ 08551.
