Myra Ellen Macia peacefully went to be with the Lord on March 28, 2018.
Born April 12, 1919, in Newport, NY, she was the daughter of the late Dr. George and Bessie Mae Herkel and was the sister of the late Alton Herkel.
She married Garland F. Macia in August 1943 after a whirlwind courtship during World War II, and she went to California on a troop train to be with her then fiancé, to get married before he was deployed. They celebrated fifty wonderful years together.
Myra was first employed by J.S. Frelinghuysen Insurance Co., then by the Law Offices of Henry Schenk and then by Ethel Corp where she was a customer service supervisor over thirty years until retiring. She was one of the first female supervisors with the company.
After her husband’s death in 1993, she became very active as a volunteer at the Hunterdon Medical Center Lobby Shop and was honored as Volunteer Of The Year in 2003. She spent many wonderful hours working with people she loved. She also volunteered at the Hunterdon Care Center for many years, helping with activities, visiting with residents, exchanging stories and sharing memories.
Affectionately known as Gram, she was a kind and gentle spirit, selfless, with a gentle spirit, thoughtful, compassionate, and always cheerful. Her Christian upbringing was apparent throughout her life. She never met a person that she did not immediately feel was a friend. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was always ready for any adventure suggested and usually was the first one in the car, ready to go.
Surviving are her three children, Nancy Gunn, Evelyn Totten and her husband, Ronald, and Gary Macia and his wife, Diane; seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the people who took care of her at the Hunterdon Medical Center.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 10:30AM in the United First Presbyterian Church of Amwell, Larison’s Corner, NJ, where Evelyn was a member. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
