Nicholas Hoyda, age 88 years, of Hillsborough Township, NJ, died on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Somerset Medical Center, Somerville, NJ.
Born in Perth Amboy, NJ, March 8, 1921, son of the late Michael and Katherina Jaworska Hoyda, he had resided in Hillsborough Township for the past fifty-two years.
Mr. Hoyda was a Chemical Handler for Union Carbide, Bound Brook, NJ from 1946 until retiring in 1988.
A United States Navy Veteran of World War II, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres, Mr. Hoyda was involved in nine major engagements.
He was an expert carpenter who built his own home and was a fifty-one year member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Flemington, NJ, where he was a former Elder, former Choir member and former member of the church softball team.
Additionally, Mr. Hoyda was a Past President and former member of the Hillsborough Rescue Squad; a member of Chapter B of the Hillsborough Senior Citizens; a member of Manville V.F.W. Post; and was Past President of the Richard P. Leary Destroyer Group.
His first wife, Charlotte Bauer Hoyda, died in 1985.
Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Bauer Hoyda; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Barbara Hoyda of Somerville, NJ; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Doug Schrade of Clinton, NJ; a step-daughter, Kathy Davidson of Winter Haven, FL; two step-sons and their spouses, Bob and Pat Smith of Winter Haven, FL and Tom and Birdie Smith of Hatboro, PA; a sister, Sophie Slawinski of Califon, NJ; ten grandchildren, Becky, Matthew, Sarah, Lori, Terri, Jennifer, Jill, Joye, Kathi and Tommy; and sixteen great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 201 Highway 31, Flemington, NJ under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Capner Street, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be Monday from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home.
