Norah Mary Dicey, age 87, died Thursday, January 14, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Bethlehem, PA.
Born February 16, 1928, in Staten Island, NY, she was the daughter of the late Simon A.G. and Elizabeth (Duff) Dicey. Norah graduated from Port Richmond High School in Staten Island in 1946. Following her graduation, she worked in Manhattan, NY, at The Hartford Insurance Co., until her retirement. Norah’s mother, Elizabeth (Duff) Dicey, immigrated from County Armagh, Northern Ireland to the USA in 1910. Along with her parents, Norah was a member of the Orange Order. Considered a story-teller, Norah enjoyed sharing many memories and the history of her Duff Irish-Scotch family.
Norah was a skilled needle-crafter; able to embroider, crochet, and even make her own clothes. However, her greatest interest was knitting. Throughout the years, she made and gave away many gifts of beautiful afghans, sweaters, scarfs, hats, mittens, and socks. Always, Norah created soft baby wool sweaters, hats and blankets to welcome, with her love, new babies to the family.
Norah loved her four late sisters, Sarah Wolf, Andromeda Helgesen, Amelia Ricciardone, and Esther Semmling. She was an aunt to her twelve nieces and nephews from the marriages of her sisters, and always a part of their lives. In addition to her sisters and her four brothers-in-law, she was predeceased by her beloved nephews, Bobby Ricciardone and Richard Wolf. It is with great sadness that the surviving ten nieces, nephews and their families say goodbye to their Aunt Norah, Shirley and Fred Bock, Barbara Wolf, Karen and Jim Gurnavage, Nancy and Fred Lesser, Georgeana Page, Kathleen and Preston Young, Lilly Zimmerman, Carl Semmling, Johanna and Ronald Baltimore, Tom and Diane Semmling, as well as a great-niece, Gail and her husband Neil Nederfield.
Norah said many times at family gatherings, “my name initials N M D, stand for “No More Dicey’s.”
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 22, 2016, at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Oceanview Cemetery in Staten Island, NY. Calling hours will be Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Norah’s name may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004 or to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
