Norman Poppel

Norman Poppel, age 91, died Sunday, May 16, 2021 at his home in Raritan Township NJ. Born July 30, 1929, in the Bronx NY, Norman was the son of the late Nathan and Charlotte (Taxier) Poppel. He lived in the Bronx until 1957 when he moved to Elizabeth, NJ, followed by residences in Union and Cranford NJ. Eventually, he moved to the Flemington NJ area in 1972 where he has lived since. Norman served as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. Norman received his Master’s in Psychology and was in private practice as a Psychologist for more than 15 years in Elizabeth and Cranford NJ. He was a Professor for more than 40 years at Middlesex County Community College and Chair of the Department of Holocaust Studies until his retirement in 2003. Norman was also a founder of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and took yearly tours with his students to the Museum. In addition to his parents, Norman was predeceased by his son, Adam David in 1996, his sister Ruth (Poppel) Isaacson in 2007, and his son, Matthew in 2021. He is survived by his son Neil Poppel of Delray Beach FL, his daughter, Julia Bell of Flemington NJ, his grandson, Bryan (Jill) and granddaughter Kimberly Bell, his niece, Nancy Isaacson of West Orange NJ, as well as a great niece and two great nephews and five great great nieces and nephews. Graveside services, officiated by Rabbi Eric Cohen, will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Cedar Park Cemetery, 735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ 07652. There are no calling hours.
