Norman William Fiess, age 101, of Whiting, NJ, was translated to his home in Glory on August 7, 2020. Born August 24, 1918, in Ringoes, NJ, he was an exemplary husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who sowed generously from a heart that genuinely loved God. He reaped a harvest of admiration and gratitude from family and friends.
In addition to his dear wife of 69 years, Caroline, who preceded him to his heavenly home in 2011, he was predeceased by his parents, his only brother Harold, and grandson, Christopher Walstrum. He leaves 4 children, Bill of Richlands, VA, Margaret (Phil) Johnston of Indianapolis, IN, John (Virginia) of Stockton, NJ and Elizabeth (John) Walstrum of Allegan, MI.
All of his eleven grandchildren remember their “Pop Pop” as one who prayed for them by name, daily. The legacy of spiritual care has continued into the generation of great grandchildren, now numbering 32.
Norman grew up in Ringoes, NJ, graduating as valedictorian from Flemington High School in 1937. He then moved on to Wheaton College in Illinois where he obtained a B.S. in chemistry but more importantly, met and married his sweetheart, Caroline Berry.
Norman then worked for 40 years as a research chemist for American Cyanamid, retiring in 1981. He was a member of The American Chemical Society and achieved two patents in his professional career.
During these years he blossomed in community mindedness by helping to petition for forming the Hunterdon Medical Center. But his primary investment was in nurturing his children’s well-being, supporting their activities, academic, musical and athletic. His desire to nurture a robust spiritual faith in his own children and other young people led to leading home Bible studies every two weeks for 17 years, preaching at the Trenton Rescue Mission and serving as an elder in their church for decades. His devotion to and love of his wife was sincere and consistent, a vital example to all who knew him. His watchfulness over his children was legendary, the catalyst for years of stories regaling his scrutiny of their activities. His children and grandchildren remember him fondly for his boundless energy, infectious curiosity and love of fun and excitement.
After their move to The Pines of Keswick, Norman continued his faithful commitments to involvement in Bible studies, chapel services and welcoming visitors – family and friends. Even though he deeply missed his beloved wife, he continued his involvement in the community life of The Pines, lobbying for a new sound system in their chapel as a help to those with hearing deficits. In the final years of his life in Hamilton, the skilled care unit of The Pines, he was loved for his perpetual cheerfulness and thankfulness. The family wants to extend their sincere thanks to the many staff on the Hamilton floor who offered Norman compassionate care during his four years on their floor. His final days and hours were typified by an extraordinary peace affirming his confidence in having eternal life with Jesus, his Lord and Savior.
