Opal M. Smith, age 95 years, of Delaware Township, NJ, died on Sunday, February 22, 2009.

Mrs. Smith was born in Bloom, KS, July 3, 1913, daughter of the late Thomas A. and Maude E. Canaday Baker.

The family moved to Kingwood Township, NJ, in 1920 where Opal began her education at Scotts School. She graduated from Lambertville High School in 1931. She had previously resided in Flemington, NJ, and Bucks County, PA, and Sergeantsville, NJ, moving to the Sandbrook section of Delaware Township, NJ in 1952.

Mrs. Smith was an eighty-five year member of the Amwell Church of the Brethren, Sandbrook, NJ, serving as Sexton for fifty years. She was also a member of the church choir and the Busy Bees organization. She was a member of the Delaware Township Senior Citizens and the Hunterdon County Senior Chorus.

Mrs. Smith was a loving babysitter to many children over the decades and was a longtime Avon sales representative. She enjoyed puzzle books, singing, collecting wheat pennies, and visiting with family and friends. She was constantly on the go, always helping others, until she became immobilized from a broken ankle in her later years.

Her husband, Lambert H. Smith, died in 1971. Her first husband, Samuel M. Kitchin, died in 1936. She was also pre-deceased by three sisters, Pauline Werner, Fern Williams, and Mildred Robbins. Surviving are two sons, Thomas W. Kitchin of Delaware Township, NJ, and Leigh Smith of Readington Township, NJ; a daughter, Lois K. Stewart of Flemington, NJ; two sisters, Vera Harrison of Newtown, PA, and Edna Cornell of Eagle River, AK; two brothers-in-law, Henry Smith and Leroy Smith and wife Hazel, all of Sergeantsville, NJ; three sisters-in-law, Jane Kitchin of Flemington, NJ, Jeanette Smith of Flemington, NJ, and Gladys Anderson of Ringoes, NJ; seven grandchildren, Thomas Stewart and wife Margie of Beach Haven, NJ, Judy Van Gilson and husband David of Holland Township, NJ, Susan Swider of West Conshohocken, PA, Lenny Swider and wife Alisa of Franklin Township, NJ, Jeffrey Swider and wife Jennifer of Leavenworth, WA, Gail Swider of Wallingford, PA, and James Swider of Readington Township, NJ; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Her life will be celebrated and remembered at Funeral Services on Saturday at 11 AM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Rosemont, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 7-9 PM in the funeral home.
