Patrick J. Flynn, age 87 years, of Toms River, NJ, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the home of his daughter, Deidre Flynn.
Born in Tubbercurry, County Sligo, Ireland on October 16, 1936, he was the son of the late John “Jack” and Annie (Cully) Flynn. He emigrated to the U.S. when he was sixteen years old. He resided in Flemington, NJ for seventeen years before moving to Ocean County, NJ twenty-six years ago.
As a young man, he proudly served as a paratrooper in the United States Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. He also attended SUNY Maritime College in Throgs Neck, NY and worked as an Engineering Area Manager at AT&T, retiring after forty-two years of service.
Patrick was proud of his Irish heritage and served as the first President of the Tara Club in New Brunswick, NJ. He was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to Irish and country music and tending to his beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, particularly alongside his beloved wife of thirty-four years, Mary T. Flynn, who passed away in 1995. Most importantly, he led his life with kindness and gratitude.
In addition to his parents and wife, Patrick was predeceased by his siblings: Sean, Benedict (Bendy), Margaret, Maura, and Nora.
Surviving are his five children: Carina Sullivan (Matt) of Armonk, NY, Nadine Flynn (Lou Dubrosa) of Mantoloking, NJ, Adrienne Foley (Dan) of Brooklyn, NY, Deidre Flynn of Toms River, NJ, and Sharon Flynn Stidham (Jim) of Springfield, IL; and his grandchildren that he loved dearly: Cole Sullivan, Maeve Sullivan, Fiona Dubrosa, Madailéin Dubrosa, Maryann Foley, Emily Foley, Devon Freer, Colin Freer, James Stidham III (Samantha), and Brennan Stidham; as well as his cherished brother, Tommy Flynn (Peggy), in Dublin, Ireland, and brother-in-law, Peter Brennan (Andrea), in Pleasantville, NY, and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 10:00 AM in St. Magdalen de Pazzi Roman Catholic Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ. Burial will follow in St. Magdalen Cemetery, 94 North Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Visitation will take place from 8:30 – 9:30 AM on Saturday morning at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ prior to the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Patrick’s name to DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Charitable Service Trust ( https://help.dav.org/ ) or St. Francis Breadline ( https://stfrancisbreadline.org ).
