Paul R. Kuhl, Sr., age 87 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at his home.
Born in Raritan Township, NJ, May 8, 1927, son of the late Paul and Mabel Kline Kuhl, he had resided in Raritan Township all his life.
Paul was Chairman of the Board of Kuhl Corporation, Raritan Township, was active for many years in many civic and community organizations and was a graduate of Flemington High School, Class of 1945.
He was a member of the Flemington Presbyterian Church; President of the Flemington Agricultural Fair; President of the Flemington Fair and Carnival Association; Past Commander of Flemington American Legion Post #159 where he also served as Adjutant, Finance Officer and Judge Advocate; member of Flemington Elks Lodge #1928 and Flemington Moose Lodge; Past President of the Hunterdon County "C" Club; Past President of the Raritan Township Republican Club 1965 & 1979; former director of the Greater Flemington Chamber of Commerce; Past Director of Mercer Mutual Insurance Co.; honorary member of Amwell Valley Fire Co. of Ringoes, NJ; member of Board of Directors of Garden State Poultry Fanciers Association and former director of the North American Gamebreeders Association. Paul also served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Paul was also President and Promoter of Flemington Speedway; a former director of Racing Promoters Workshop, Daytona Beach, FL.; was elected to the National Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1991; was Vice-President of National Old Timers Auto Racing Club. In addition, he was voted Auto Racing Promoter of the Year in the Eastern United States at Daytona Beach in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1991; was voted Auto Racing Promoter of the Year Nationwide in 1991; and received American Racing Legends Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.
His daughter, Melissa Yerkes, died in 2010.
Surviving are his wife of thirty-six years, Jacqueline Petrole Kuhl; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Jeannine Kuhl of Raritan Township, NJ; three step-sons, Libro Fusco and his wife, Beverly of Allentown, PA, Michael Fusco and his wife, Barbara of Flemington, NJ and Mark Fusco of Flemington, NJ; a son-in-law, William Yerkes of Raritan Township, NJ; a brother, Henry Kuhl of Raritan Township, NJ; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 28, 2014, at 11:00 AM in the Flemington Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Flemington, NJ, followed by interment in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be Sunday 1:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ, and also Monday 10:00-11:00 AM at the church.
