R. Thomas Jones

Robert Thomas Jones, age 74, of Pittstown NJ, died Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at Brakeley Park Center in Lopatcong Township NJ. Born February 11, 1942, in Elizabeth NJ, Tom was the son of the late William Robert and Mary H. (McMahon) Jones. He lived in Linden for many years, moving to Berkeley Heights for 20 years and then moving to Pittstown 22 years ago. A very quiet person, Tom attended Rutgers University and Stevens Institute of Technology while working as a cable installer. He eventually started his own fiber optic and cable installation company located in Berkeley Heights NJ, that he operated until recently. Tom served his country in the United States Army from 1964 through 1966, spending much of his military time stationed overseas in Berlin, Germany. While they grew up in Linden neighborhoods that were in close proximity, he met Anna Bank in 1968 and the two were married in 1970, spending more than 46 years as a married couple. The two enjoyed their annual week in Seneca Lake NY while competing at a dog show there. Tom also enjoyed working in his yard taking care of the property and feeding the birds. Tom’s passion was racing cars. He has been a member of the NHRA since a teenager when he raced his first 1951 Ford at the age of 17. Drag racing was his specialty and he formed “Tom Jones Racing” in 1974 to race, along with his brother Jeff, on a semi-professional basis at tracks up and down the East Coast. Tom was a very kind and generous person to all that he met, often taking care of others before thinking about himself; for that, he will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him. Tom is survived by his wife, Anna (Bank) Jones, his step-son, Francis Jones of Newark NJ, his sister, R. Susan Archer of Mullica Hill NJ, his brother and sister-in-law, A. Jeffrey and Debra Jones of Edison NJ, and his three nephews. Funeral service officiated by the Rev. Christopher Voorhees, will be celebrated at 12:00 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ. Interment will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery in Quakertown NJ. Calling hours will be Thursday, February 9th from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm and Saturday morning from 10 am until the time of service at the funeral home. There are no services on Friday.
