Richard E. Geha, Ph.D., noted Psychoanalyst and Author, died Tuesday, March 10, 2020 after a lengthy illness.
Born October 24, 1940 in St. Joseph, Missouri, Richard was the son of the late Richard and Norma (Gregory) Geha.
A life-long learner and avid reader, Richard highly valued education. After receiving his Bachelor and Master of Arts in English Literature at Missouri University, Richard traveled to New York to pursue his love of psychology. He obtained a Master of Arts in Psychology at the New School for Social Research before traveling to Glasgow University in Scotland where he was awarded his Doctorate of Philosophy in Psychology. While there, Richard was recognized for his outstanding contribution to the field and was invited to pursue psychoanalytic education at the Anna Freud Clinic in London, England. Later, he returned to the States, and completed his Psychoanalytic training at IPTAR: The Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research in New York, becoming one of the first Ph.D. psychologists to do so. For more than forty years Richard maintained a private practice as a Psychoanalyst in North Brunswick and Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Additionally, he held an Adjunct Faculty position at Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, and was a faculty member at IPTAR. Richard was an accomplished author—his professional publications in the field of Psychoanalysis are still utilized as educational tools in graduate programs today.
Richard pursued his love of literature and history and became a published author of fiction and a play-write. His play, Satan’s Whore, Victoria Woodhull appeared off-Broadway in New York in 2012. After publishing two books of short stories, his novel Death in The Garden of Desire was published last fall.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his best friend of more than sixty years, Walter Stepp. He is survived by his adoring wife, Lisa Cifrese of Delaware Township, New Jersey; his sister Marti Geha of Valencia, California; his niece, Candice (Kyle) Tyson, his nephew Chris (Laura) Kollman, , niece Jamie (Matt) Dent, and his great-nephews Kyle Tyson, Kevin, Patrick and Nathaniel Kollman.
Visitation will be on Friday, March 13, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at his home at 50 Dunkard Church Road, Stockton, New Jersey, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 pm at the house. Interment will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Barber's Burying Ground, Lambertville-Headquarters Rd, Stockton NJ. Please arrive by 10:15 am at the house on Saturday morning for the procession to the cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Richard’s name may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 14 Commerce Drive, Suite 301, Cranford, New Jersey, 07016, and to the Amwell Valley Ambulance Corps, P.O. Box 147, Ringoes, New Jersey, 08551.
