Richard L. Welsh, age 80, died Saturday, October 3, 2020, at the Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township NJ.
Born July 10, 1940, in Doylestown PA, Dick was the son of the late Louis and Kathryn (Van Hart) Welsh. A graduate of Rutger’s University, Dick served as a first lieutenant in the US Army from 1962-1964, stationed at Fort Ord, Monterey Army Base in California.
Upon discharge he returned to his hometown of Lambertville, NJ to work in the family wine shop, later becoming owner. His lifelong love of food and wine inspired memorable trips to vineyards in California, France, and Spain and his love of the ocean and the Jersey Shore to month long vacations in Stone Harbor, NJ. He was the reigning champion of family Jeopardy games and loved reading, fishing, country drives in his convertible, horse racing, attending Rutger’s Football games and traveling the US in search of interesting restaurants.
He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, exceptional memory, and encyclopedic knowledge of wine and spirits.
In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his two sons, David and Matthew Welsh. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred (Yesco) Welsh, his four children and their spouses, Susan and Stephanie of New Hope PA, Brian and Theresa of Rosemont NJ, Eric and Liz of Philadelphia PA, and Adam and Jill of Coopersburg PA, as well as his five granddaughters, Skyla, Sierra, Ava, Hannah and Elise. He is also survived by his sister Susan Testa and partner Joe Marvulli, and her children Michele and Michael and grandchildren Katelyn, Samantha, Nick, Alex, and GiGi, his sister-in-law Elaine Yesco and brother-in-law John Yesco.
A family celebration of life will be private, followed by burial in the Rosemont Cemetery. Cremation and funeral arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington NJ.
