Richard Luongo, of Raritan Township NJ, age 86 years, died Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township, NJ.
Born May 9, 1930, in Newark NJ, Richard was the son of the late Pasquale (“Jim”) and Margaret DeCangi Luongo. He lived in Essex County NJ in his early life, when he met Helen Ruggiero in 1957 and the two were wed in 1958.
Richard was a proud police officer. He graduated from Essex County College and went to work as a police officer for 12 years with the Newark Police Department. He then joined the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and retired in 1988 as a Lieutenant after 21 years.
Richard was a friendly, outgoing and helpful person throughout his life. After retirement, he loved playing a game of golf with friends, especially at Heron Glen and Beaver Brook Country Club. At one point, Richard had a hole-in-one at Apple Mountain Golf Course in Belvidere, NJ. He enjoyed listening to relaxing, soothing music from time to time as well.
Richard was a perfectionist, an impeccable dresser and was an avid NY Giants fan, however, what he loved the most was watching his grandchildren participate in many events in the area.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brothers, Michael, Kenneth, and Joseph Luongo. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen Luongo, his sons and daughters-in-law, Richard P. and Mary Luongo of Annandale NJ, and John J. and Diana Luongo of Cape Coral FL, his sister, Margaret Grossmann of North Carolina, his granddaughter, Alyssa Luongo and his grandson, Evan Luongo, as well as many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.
Graveside services and inurnment will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 17, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Mausoleum, 316 Old Allerton Road, Annandale, NJ 08801. Cremation and funeral arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. There are no calling hours.
Flowers are not permitted in the mausoleum and the family has asked that in lieu of flowers, a donation in Richard’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7 Ridgedale Avenue, Suite 103, Cedar Knolls, NJ 07927.
