Richard Philip Urban

Richard Philip Urban (Rich), age 74 years, of Flemington, NJ died peacefully at home on Friday, May 25, 2018 after a long illness. Born in Irvington, NJ, Rich was raised in Nutley, NJ, the son of the late Jacob and Vera (Burack) Urban. He was also predeceased by his brother Robert and his sister Beverly Gloumakoff. Rich graduated from Nutley High School in 1962 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Rutgers University. After graduating from college, Rich joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at 8th Air Force Headquarters, Westover AFB, Massachusetts. Upon returning from the Air Force, Rich accepted a position as a reliability engineer with Bendix Corporation's Navigation and Control Division in Teterboro, NJ formulating reliability predictions for guidance systems of the Apollo space program. He then began his career with AT&T as a programmer in the Stock and Bond division. He advanced at AT&T in various positions and Departments as manager of programmers and analysts involved in system design and development. Rich was known for his technical and problem solving abilities, his humor, work ethic and teamwork. He retired in 1998 from AT&T's tax services organization on Mt Kemble Ave. in Morristown, NJ. In 1969, Richard married Ellen (Smith) Urban of Nutley, NJ and they raised one son, Gregory, while residing in Hillsborough, Glen Gardner and Stirling NJ. Richard and Ellen moved to New Hope, PA in 2003 and then to Flemington in 2013. Rich loved the Jersey shore and enjoyed many summers in Seaside Park, NJ and in Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island. He loved nature and the environment and spent hours walking, keeping the landscape clean, feeding the birds and other animals and telling his "trivia" stories to those who would listen. Rich is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Ellen, son Gregory and his wife, Melissa (Pfennig) Urban of Flemington, grandsons Tyler and Jake Urban and many loving relatives and friends. Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Christopher Voorhees will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St, Flemington NJ. Friends may call Thursday from 2:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will be held privately at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown PA.
