Robert R. (“Dick”) Nichols, age 84 years, of Washington Township NJ, died Friday, June 23, 2017 at Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township NJ.
Born August 18, 1932, Dick was the son of the late Arnold and Elizabeth (King) Nichols. Dick grew up in Dover, NJ and the surrounding area and graduated in 1950 from Mountain Lakes High School where he lettered in Cross Country running. He earned an Agricultural degree from Rutgers University before being drafted into the United States Army. Following his enlistment, he earned a second degree from Rutgers University in Accounting. He retired in 1996 after 20 years of service as an Auditor and Supervisor for the State of New Jersey Department of Human Services.
Dick was an avid gardener and sports cars fanatic. He was the oldest member of the Northern NJ Porsche Club, where he raced cars in the 60’s, especially the annual “PA Hill Climb” and various Ice Racing events. He was a member of the Craigmeur Ski Club, Stanton Grange, a senior bowling league in Washington NJ, and the Hunterdon County Hiking Club. He also participated in various driving schools.
Dick is survived by his two daughters, Meredith Nichols of Easton PA, and Katrina Nichols of Kennett Square PA, his three grandchildren, Daphne, Torin, and Mallory, as well as his companion of 27 years, Carol Hrubesh of Flemington.
In addition to his parents and step-mother, Helen Stelce Nichols, Dick is predeceased by his aunts, Grace King Eagles, Katherine King Dugan, and his uncle, Albert King. He also leaves behind his cousins, Lois King Peery of NY and Albert King Jr. in Florida.
A memorial service with Military honors will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Cremation and interment in Mount Freedom Cemetery in Randolph NJ, was private. Visitation will be Saturday from 2:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Salvation Army NJ division in care of Camp Tecumseh, 445 Mechlin Corner Rd., Pittstown, NJ 08867.
